Thea Bowman Leadership Academy
Thea Bowman Leadership Academy (TBLA) is a tuition-free public school located in Gary, Indiana. TBLA is dedicated to providing an outstanding educational experience for grades K-12 on two beautiful campuses.
In 2003, TBLA was established by the Drexel Foundation for Educational Excellence, starting with grades K-6. Each year, the next grade level was added until the 12th grade was reached in 2007. In 2007, the junior and high school campus was built.
TBLA prides itself in engaging scholars in rigorous and robust curricula and instruction, providing a college prep curriculum, a high-quality STEM program, and a plethora of dual credit course offerings.
The Challenge
Thea Bowman Leadership Academy was facing two major challenges with its school security system:
Broken door systems
Both the elementary and middle/high school campuses had security door systems that were broken, requiring a security person to be on-site at all times to manage entry and exit.
Outdated technology
The school’s existing security system was outdated and did not provide the level of control and automation that the school needed to ensure the safety of its students and staff.
Our Solution
TBLA partnered with AKA Comp to implement a new IT infrastructure and provide managed IT services. AKA Comp’s solution included:

Result
The new access door system has helped Thea Bowman Leadership Academy to significantly improve its school security. The system is easy to use and has been well-received by both staff and students. The school administration is now able to more effectively manage access to the school and has a greater sense of security knowing that the system is in place.
