Aligning IT Infrastructure with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and FortiGate
Project Overview
Client: The Higher Institute of Arts and Technology (HIAT)
Timeline: Winter – Fall 2022
Role: Technical Assistance for IT Infrastructure Upgrade
Tools Used: Windows 10, Windows 7, Microsoft
End-Points: 250 devices
Project Background
The Higher Institute of Arts and Technology (HIAT) is dedicated to providing a robust, research-based educational curriculum that integrates the arts, computer technology, and STEM. HIAT aims to equip students with essential skills such as honesty, service to others, a strong work ethic, and a clear vision for their future.
The Challenge
HIAT faced several critical issues with its existing network infrastructure:
Single Switch Traffic
All network traffic was channeled through a single switch, causing congestion and inefficiency.
Layer 2 Infrastructure
The network used a Class A subnet, which provided more IP addresses than needed.
Underutilized Firewall
The firewall was only partially configured, limiting its effectiveness.
Unmanaged Access Points
Access points were not connected to the wireless controller, preventing cloud management.
Disorganized Server Rack
The server rack lacked proper cable management, making it difficult to track and troubleshoot issues.
Our Solution
To address these challenges, AKA Comp Solutions implemented a comprehensive IT infrastructure upgrade, aligning with the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework. Key steps included:
Network Traffic Optimization
- Switch Installation: Replaced the single 48-port switch with three new HPE Aruba switches (one 24-port and two 48-port switches) to distribute traffic and reduce congestion
- VLAN Configuration: Configured seven Virtual LANs (VLANs) to segment network traffic:
- Management VLAN: For network gear and servers.
- Wired VLAN: For wired desktops and printers.
- Wireless VLANs: Separate VLANs for STAFF and STUDENT SSIDs.
- Services VLAN: For cameras and other services.
- VoIP VLAN: For phones.
Subnet Optimization
- Switch to Class C Subnet: Reduced IP address range to meet actual needs.
- Layer 2 VLANs: Created for efficient traffic management.
- Higher Bandwidth Uplinks: Provided resilience and high availability, including redundant uplinks to Dell Hypervisor.
Firewall Configuration
- Subnet Hierarchy: Implemented a hierarchical model for routing network traffic.
- Web Interface: Configured a new interface for efficient firewall management.
- Trunk Configuration and Pruning: Ensured correct routing of VLAN-specific traffic.
Access Points Configuration
- Wireless Controller Integration: Connected access points to the wireless controller for cloud management.
- Distributed Ports: Spread access points across all switches to prevent overloading a single switch.
DHCP Configuration
- Relocation to Firewall: Moved DHCP from the server to the firewall to reduce server load.
Server Rack Setup
- Cable Management: Optimized and tagged all Ethernet cables.
- Network Diagram: Created to document setup and facilitate troubleshooting.
The Results
The project successfully aligned HIAT’s IT infrastructure with its operational needs and the ITIL framework. Key outcomes included:
Optimized Network Traffic
Distributed network traffic across multiple switches, reducing congestion and improving performance.
Efficient Subnet Utilization
Class C subnet provided an appropriate IP range, enhancing network management.
Effective Firewall Use
Comprehensive configuration allowed the firewall to direct traffic efficiently.
Cloud-Managed Access Points
Access points were now manageable via the cloud, providing better control and monitoring.
Improved Cable Management
Tagged and organized cables simplified future troubleshooting and maintenance.
Enhanced Network Segmentation
Separate VLANs for different functions improved network security and efficiency.
