The Challenge

HIAT faced several critical issues with its existing network infrastructure:

Single Switch Traffic

Layer 2 Infrastructure

Underutilized Firewall

Unmanaged Access Points

Disorganized Server Rack

Our Solution

To address these challenges, AKA Comp Solutions implemented a comprehensive IT infrastructure upgrade, aligning with the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework. Key steps included:

Network Traffic Optimization

  • Switch Installation: Replaced the single 48-port switch with three new HPE Aruba switches (one 24-port and two 48-port switches) to distribute traffic and reduce congestion
  • VLAN Configuration: Configured seven Virtual LANs (VLANs) to segment network traffic:
    • Management VLAN: For network gear and servers.
    • Wired VLAN: For wired desktops and printers.
    • Wireless VLANs: Separate VLANs for STAFF and STUDENT SSIDs.
    • Services VLAN: For cameras and other services.
    • VoIP VLAN: For phones.

Subnet Optimization

  • Switch to Class C Subnet: Reduced IP address range to meet actual needs.
  • Layer 2 VLANs: Created for efficient traffic management.
  • Higher Bandwidth Uplinks: Provided resilience and high availability, including redundant uplinks to Dell Hypervisor.

Firewall Configuration

  • Subnet Hierarchy: Implemented a hierarchical model for routing network traffic.
  • Web Interface: Configured a new interface for efficient firewall management.
  • Trunk Configuration and Pruning: Ensured correct routing of VLAN-specific traffic.

Access Points Configuration

  • Wireless Controller Integration: Connected access points to the wireless controller for cloud management.
  • Distributed Ports: Spread access points across all switches to prevent overloading a single switch.

DHCP Configuration

  • Relocation to Firewall: Moved DHCP from the server to the firewall to reduce server load.

Server Rack Setup

  • Cable Management: Optimized and tagged all Ethernet cables.
  • Network Diagram: Created to document setup and facilitate troubleshooting.

The Results

The project successfully aligned HIAT’s IT infrastructure with its operational needs and the ITIL framework. Key outcomes included:

Optimized Network Traffic

Efficient Subnet Utilization

Effective Firewall Use

Cloud-Managed Access Points

Improved Cable Management

Enhanced Network Segmentation
